Some people express reluctance over voting for minority candidates, not because they themselves are racist or sexist, but because they’re afraid other people are. Here I argue that this line of reasoning reflects a social psychological concept called pluralistic ignorance, and explain what consequences pluralistic ignorance carries for important decisions like electing representatives.
